COMPRESSION QUESTIONS

What is gradient compression?

True gradient compression stockings improve blood flow. Therafirm stockings are designed to deliver a controlled amount of pressure which is greatest at the distal end (ankle) of the garment and gradually decreases towards the proximal end (top) of the stocking. This gradient pressure promotes better circulation to help control swelling and relieve tired and achy legs.

What does "mmHg" stand for?

The abbreviation mmHg stands for millimeters of Mercury. This measurement is used to measure pressure. Since gradient compression hosiery exert a gradually decreasing amount of pressure up the leg, this unit of measure helps express the amount of pressure the wearer will feel.

What are levels of compression?

Levels of compression are common and each represent a different amount of pressure or tightness that garments places on the leg. Common compression levels include light (10–15mmHg), mild (15–20mmHg), moderate (20–30mmHg), and firm (30–40mmHg). The higher the compression level the tighter the garment will feel on the leg. Higher compression levels are often prescribed for those with more severe venous or medical needs. If you feel that you would benefit from a higher level of gradient compression, please consult your physician.

How do I measure for compression?

Patients should be measured when they first get up in the morning. This helps prevent the fitter from measuring based upon the affected area’s circumference after swelling has occurred. Measure the patient while he or she is standing. If the fitting can not take place before the patient has been on his/her feet for some time, the patient’s legs and feet should be elevated for 15 minutes prior to taking the measurements.

  1. Take snug measurements against the skin.
  2. Avoid measuring over socks or slacks.
  3. Never allow folds in stockings.
  4. Never remove any wound dressings.
  5. Stockings should not be too tight over dressings.
  6. Socks must fit the shape of the foot.
  7. Socks should have even compression or elasticity so that the sock takes on the anatomical shape of the foot without high compression (binding points) that may create discomfort or circulation obstruction.
  8. Observe the bare foot prior to donning the sock.
  9. After donning the sock, the foot shape should be consistent with that of the bare foot.

Click the size chart on each product page to see the measurements for that specific product.

Are compression products hard to get on?

For many men and women that have never worn compression hosiery, putting on your new stockings can be difficult. Compression hosiery has more resistance or compression than traditional pantyhose hose or stockings. Because they fit more snug, they are a little more difficult to put on.

Why is gradient compression tighter than my regular hosiery?

Gradient compression hosiery products are constructed differently than traditional hosiery. True gradient compression hosiery products feature a controlled amount of pressure that is greatest at the ankle and gradually decreases as it comes up the leg. This graduated compression helps promote better circulation, prevent swelling and energize tired achy legs.

Many people who have never worn gradient compression before feel that these garments are difficult to put on or tighter than traditional pantyhose or tights they have worn. It is this “snug” fit that is providing the graduated pressure. However, gradient compression hosiery should not be so tight that they are uncomfortable and/or are digging into your legs or waist. Normally, compression is only too tight when the wrong size is being worn. It is very important for people to measure following the guidelines for the gradient compression garment to ensure a proper fit and that they are receiving the benefits of graduated compression.

If pain, discomfort, or areas of binding occur, the stockings should be removed immediately. Always consult with your physician before wearing gradient compression garments.

What is the difference between "support", "compression", and "gradient compression"?

Support, compression, and gradient compression are seen as interchangeable, but they are not all created equal! Support often refers to control top. Support pantyhose do not provide any gradient compression or compression in the product except for the thigh and tummy area. Compression normally refers to a product that provides equal pressure through the garment. It will feel tight all over. Gradient compression products are provide the tightest ‘squeeze’ or pressure at the ankle and gradually decrease the pressure or ‘squeeze’ up the leg. This helps to improve circulation, energize tired legs, and prevent and reduce swelling.

Is it okay to wear tights or pantyhose during pregnancy?

It sure is! During pregnancy comfort is key. Be sure to find a pair of tights or pantyhose that are comfortable for you. Unlike other maternity pantyhose or tights, Preggers tights and pantyhose have a stretchy tummy area that expands as your belly grows. We don’t use pouches or panels on our products that can be irritating.

Our expandable tummy area acts as a built in belly support that can be worn over your belly or folded under your belly. The tummy area does not have any compression in it so it is not uncomfortable for you.

What is the right amount of compression for maternity support hose

The right level of compression for maternity support hose will vary. If you are experiencing mild swelling or tired, achy legs or are looking to energize your legs a light or 10–15mmHg level of compression will probably be just right for you. If you are experience moderate or severe swelling or other foot and/or leg issues, it’s important to talk to your health care provider to help determine what level of compression they recommend for maternity support hose.

Compression on the tights and pantyhose stops around the mid to upper thigh. There is no compression in the crotch, across the rear or around the waist. Although there isn’t gradient compression, there is shaping support.

Compression on the tights and pantyhose stops around the mid to upper thigh. There is no compression in the crotch, across the rear or around the waist. Although there isn’t gradient compression, there is shaping support.

How high should the knee highs and trouser socks be on my legs?

This is a very important question! Therafirm knee highs and trouser socks should fit just below the bend of the knee. This ensures that you are receiving the proper amount of compression all the way up your calf. If your knee high or trouser sock is too long, please do not fold it over. This may cause reverse compression and negate any benefit that the compression sock is providing. Contact us if you think your knee high or trouser sock is too long and we’ll be happy to help you find a product that better suits your needs!

What makes the Ease line different from the regular Therafirm line?

Ease by Therafirm® is made with premium, ultra-stretchy yarns that make donning a breeze while still providing lab-tested true gradient compression. Increasing stretch and being available in both short and long lengths accommodate a wider range of patients with fewer sizes. Also, Ease features a smooth toe seam for closed toe styles and a smooth band on open toe styles that keep feet comfortable. Ease knee highs are available with or without a silicone band. Ease is also affordably priced and to increase patient compliance.

Are there special instructions for donning Ease?

Yes! Due to the high stretch yarns, it’s easy to go overboard when donning and pull the garment past proper placement. Be sure to evenly distribute the fabric as you are donning rather than pulling up too far and trying to pull down and adjust placement afterwards. Knee high top bands should be placed approximately one to two inches below the knee. Thigh highs should go to the gluteal fold.

My Ease compression doesn't feel nearly as tight as other brands. How do I know it's delivering the compression I need?

Because Ease is made with high-tech, highly stretchable yarns, we often get this question. Be assured that we take compression and quality seriously at Therafirm. Ease is lab-tested to ensure proper true gradient compression at the appropriate level indicated on each product.
