Sensory DIY Project: Calm Down Bottles

Calm Down Bottles are a wonderful sensory tool to help in calming anxious children that have sensory sensitivities. Children can watch the calming movement in the bottles, which helps them to self-regulate when their emotions become overwhelming.

Calm Down Bottles can be made dozens of different ways and can be individually customized. Try these two versions, or experiment with your own materials to create a unique bottle.

Calm Down Bottle #1 - Ocean Inspired

Supplies:

  • Clear water bottles - Voss water bottles work really well, but any clear bottle without label will do
  • Funnel
  • Glitter - super fine glitter works best
  • Canola oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Super glue

Directions:

  1. Using a funnel, pour glitter into the empty water bottle. You can determine the amount, but definitely cover the bottom of the bottle.
  2. Fill the bottle 1/3 of the way full with oil. This isn't a precise measurement since bottle sizes may vary.
  3. Fill up the rest of the bottle with water, but leave some space at the top of the bottle.
  4. Remove the funnel and add food coloring. You can determine the amount to use, but a few drops gives a nice rich color.
  5. Screw the lid on tightly.
  6. Shake it up.
  7. After shaking, observe the results and adjust. You may need to add additional food coloring or glitter.
  8. Once satisfied with the results of the bottle, use super glue to glue the lid to the bottle.
