Pregnancy Conditions Improved or Prevented by Compression Hosiery

Find relief from leg cramps and swelling during pregnancy with our compression hosiery. Learn how to improve blood circulation and prevent DVT and varicose veins.

Pregnancy is a joyous time in the life of many women. But since pregnancy is a medical condition, that joy is accompanied with a risk of discomforts and health issues.

The following conditions and discomforts can be prevented, improved or relieved by wearing compression hosiery.

Leg Cramps

Leg cramps are a common discomfort experienced by many pregnant women. Leg cramps are typically painful and often occur during the night. Changes in blood circulation and added weight and stress on the leg muscles are the most likely culprit.

Although leg cramps usually subside within a few minutes and are generally not serious, most women choose to avoid them if possible. Wearing compression during the day can help to improve circulation, thereby reducing the likelihood of leg cramps.

Swelling

During pregnancy, a woman’s body produces 50% more body fluid than during times when not pregnant. In addition, the growing uterus puts increased pressure on the veins, which slows their work to return blood back to the heart. Much of this increased fluid tends to pool in the extremities, particularly the legs.

Wearing compression hosiery or socks gives the veins a boost to help return excess fluid back to the heart. When pooled blood is returned to the heart, painful swelling is reduced.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

An increase in hormones that occurs during pregnancy makes women more susceptible to blood clots, particularly a dangerous condition known as deep vein thrombosis. Since the growing uterus again puts pressure on the veins, it contributes to the blood pooling and increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Compression socks increase circulation, which helps to prevent the blood pooling and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Varicose Veins

Another common condition during pregnancy is varicose veins. This occurs when small valves in the veins don’t work properly. These valves prevent the blood from flowing backward. When the blood flows backward, it collects within the veins and causes the veins themselves to become enlarged and swollen. People with varicose veins may notice evidence of varicose on their skin. The veins appear as deep blue or purple knots or ropes running down the legs.

Compression socks give the veins a much-needed boost, doing the job of the non-working valves. When the blood is pushed back to the heart, it isn’t available to pool relieving and preventing varicose veins.
