Why Choose a Seam-Free Garment for Your Orthotic Interface

Are you wearing an interface with your orthotic brace? You probably are, but if your interface isn’t seamless you might be creating more problems than you’re solving. What makes seamless interfaces better? Here are the top 5 reasons.

1. Prevents Skin Irritation

Seams can cause friction between the brace and the skin. Since a brace fits snug against the body, a raised seam will rub with regular movement. This can lead to chafing, redness, and even blisters. This is especially true if the brace wearer has sensitive skin, circulation issues, or neuropathy. A seamless interface eliminates the source of friction.

2. Improves Comfort

A seamless interface distributes more uniform pressure across the surface of the skin instead of an interruption at the point of the seam. A uniform amount of pressure across the part of the body with an orthotic brace provides more comfort for the wearer and eliminates pressure points that can dig into the skin. This is especially important for prolonged wear.

3. Enhances Fit

A seamless interface conforms better to the contours of the body providing a better fit. A better fitting interface reduces the amount of bunching or folding that occurs between the brace and the body. In addition, a seamless, snug interface is less likely to sag or slip causing discomfort.

4. Reduces Skin Breakdown

Skin irritation can lead to skin breakdown over time. Stopping irritation before it leads to skin breakdown will keep skin healthier. Skin breakdown can be difficult to remedy, especially if the condition causing it remains. Protecting skin from the get-go will lead to better comfort.

5. Increased Compliance

An orthotic device usually needs to be worn constantly and consistently in order to treat the condition it is prescribed for. When a patient feels more comfort and does not feel pain or irritation, they are more likely to be compliant in their treatment plans laid out by physicians and therapists. Wearing a seamless interface, providing more comfort, leads to better results.

Whether your treatment includes wearing a spinal brace, an AFO or KAFO brace, a knee brace, or a cranial helmet, wearing a seamless interface between the brace and the skin will lead to more comfort, healthier skin, and more compliance.
